Wife of road mishap victim awarded 6.67 lakhs as compensation

The wife of a 31-year-old man, who was mowed down by a rashly-driven truck, has been awarded a compensation of Rs 6.67 lakhs by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT Presiding Officer Rekha Rani directed Oriental Insurance Company Ltd, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay the sum to the victim’s family. “The over all compensation comes to Rs 6,67,288. The insurance company is, accordingly, directed to deposit the awarded amount within 30 days,” the tribunal said.

It awarded the compensation on a petition by the wife of late Joginder Singh, a shop-keeper by profession. Singh’s wife had told the court that on July 4, 2006 night, a rashly-driven truck had hit her husband’s scooter in North Delhi area here. She told the court that due to the collision, Singh had sustained grievous injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died. Truck driver Sher Bahadur Chand, however, told the court that the deceased’s wife, in collusion with the police, had falsely implicated him and that the accident was caused due to Singh’s own negligence.

The tribunal had, however, rejected his argument after considering that Chand was being prosecuted for causing the accident in a criminal matter linked with this case.
