Union strike hits banking, insurance services

Responding to the call of central trade unions for two-day nationwide strike, the employees associated with different trade unions went on strike in Varanasi on Wednesday. The strike affected services of roadways, banks, insurance and postal department.

The employees held demonstrations and meetings at different places to raise their voice. The movement of people did not get affected as around 40 UPSRTC buses were running besides auto-rickshaws.

Similarly, with the closure of banks and insurance companies, normal services got affected. The insurance employees under Varanasi Division Insurance Employees Association went on strike.

According to the general secretary Sagar Chatterjee, the employees of Life Insurance Corporation in the Varanasi, Chandauli, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi) and Ballia went on strike and offices remained closed. They held a demonstration in front of the divisional office of LIC in support of their demands. The strike remained peaceful in the city. The ADM (City) MP Singh said that the situation was being monitored closely to avert any untoward situation.
