Protest against firing at insurance company

Several trade unions and members of the civil society recently condemned the attack on employees of the government-owned General Insurance subsidiary National Insurance Company Ltd by anti-social elements.
A public meeting cum demonstration in this regard was held in front of the Divisional Office of the National Insurance Company Ltd, M G Marg, Civil Lines on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting, City North MLA Anugrah Narayan Singh said he would make all possible efforts to ensure the arrest of the culprit.

The meeting was conducted by the Zonal Vice President of GIEA, Northern Zone, Mohan Chand. Other participants included trade union leader D K Ghosh, Avinash Mishra, Santosh Vishwakarma of AIIEA (LIC Wing), Harish Chand Dwivedi, CITU’s Alok Bose, Gyanendra Shukla, Naseem, Ram and Sagar. The participants unanimously demanded arrest of the culprits, and said the agitation would be intensified if the police failed to do so.

Narrating the sequence of events, Chand alleged that a garage owner named Sabir Khan visited Allahabad National DO on Monday and misbehaved with the senior deputy manager in the latter’s chamber before destroying certain official papers. Subsequently, Khan allegedly abused employees at the claims department and fired at Vijay Bahadur Maurya and Ajay Pratap Singh, both employees at the department.

He said both the employees somehow managed to save themselves and the damaged glass top of the table and computer keyboard are evidence of the firing. Chand said Khan brandished his firearm and managed to escape before the police could be informed.

The incident was reported to the Civil Lines police and an FIR lodged under IPC’s sections 307 and 353 against Sabir Khan.
