Insurance Institute of India establishes Research Grants/Award for Pursuing PhD in Insurance

Introduction:

In order to promote academic research in the area of  insurance and allied areas, Insurance Institute of India has established a system to provide Research grants/award for candidates pursuing Doctoral Studies in these areas.

 

Research Grant/Award:

III would provide a grant/award for pursuing research in Insurance and allied areas under the following systems:

1. Research grant for pursuing doctoral studies – full time

2. Research grant for pursuing doctoral studies – part time

3. One time Research grant for JRF candidates – general

4. Research award after completion of  Doctoral studies

All the grants and awards are specifically designated for encouraging research in the area of Insurance and allied areas; therefore the candidates are required to show proof accordingly (details provided in the subsequent pages)I. Research Grant for pursuing Doctoral Studies – Full time

Eligibility and Procedure

Eligibility: following are some of the broad conditions of eligibility laid down by III for the grant.

i. The candidates  should have registered for PhD in Commerce/Economics/Management in any recognized university in the full time mode. University includes State Universities, Central Universities, and Deemed-tobe-University institutions that are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Besides this, there are some autonomous institutions which do not have UGC recognition but are Institutions of national importance such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Schools of Management of IIT’s;  the candidates in  these institutes are also eligible.  Candidates pursuing PhD in distance learning mode are not eligible.

ii. There is no upper age limit.

iii. The candidate must not be admitted under the JRF scheme.

iv. The candidate must not have taken up any kind of part-time work which entitles him a salary/remuneration.

v. They should not be drawing any grant/financial assistance of any nature from any other source/institution/organization for pursuing the doctoral studies

In cases where the candidate subsequently gets JRF/converts into part-time scholar the grant as applicable in the relevant scheme shall automatically be applicable if the subject/area in which he is pursuing the studies remains the same.

Procedure for application:

The candidates are required to submit an application to III with the following details in the format provided in the website, some of which are

i. Title of the thesis/area/topic in which he has been admitted to pursue PhD and the department/university details.

ii. Copy of the admission letter showing all the above;  It must be clear  in the admission letter that he is admitted on a full time basis.

iii. Brief summary/abstract  of the work he proposes to undertake in the course of his studies.

iv. Self-declaration signed by him that he is not currently  under the JRF scheme and not employed anywhere and is not drawing any regular income; duly forwarded by the supervisor and certified by the Head of the department.

Nature of Grant: The grants shall be only in the form of financial assistance;  financial assistance shall be provided to the selected candidates to a maximum amount of Rs. one lakh per candidate. A onetime contingency grant of Rs. 25,000 shall be admissible towards purchase of books, journals, stationary, and other printing and documenting expenses.

Procedure for release of Grants: Once the application is approved; the grant would be released to the candidate through the university department in three stages.

Stage one: Rs. 25,000 on completion of First year of registration and the mandatory Course work required for continuing the studies; in case of M.Phil candidates and others who are exempted from the course work require to submit proof accordingly.

Stage Two: Rs. 25,000 on completion of the second year of registration and presentation and approval of the research methodology seminar at the department;

Stage Three: Rs. 50,000 on completion of three years of registration and on production of proof of submission of thesis;

The contingency grant shall be provided to the candidate after completion of 18 months of registration after providing for sufficient proof of expenditure. II.

 

Research grant for Members pursuing Doctoral studies – part time

Eligibility and Procedure

Eligibility: following are some of the broad conditions of eligibility laid down by III for the grant.

a. The candidates should have registered for PhD in Commerce/Economics/Management in any recognized university in the part time mode. It includes State Universities, Central Universities, and Deemed-to-be-University institutions that are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Besides this, there are some autonomous institutions which do not have UGC recognition but are Institutions of national importance such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Schools of Management of IIT’s; the candidates in these institutes are also eligible. Candidates pursuing PhD in distance learning mode are not eligible.

b. There is no upper age limit.

c.  They should not be drawing any grant/financial assistance of any nature from any other source/institution/organization for pursuing the doctoral studies.

Procedure for application: The candidates are required to submit an application to III with the following details in the format provided in the website; some of which are

i. Title of the thesis/area/topic in which he has been admitted to pursue PhD and the department/university details.

ii. Copy of the admission letter showing all the above; Brief summary/abstract of the work he proposes to undertake in the course of his studies.

Nature of Grant: The grants shall be only in the form of financial assistance;  financial assistance shall be provided to the selected candidates to a maximum amount of Rs. 50,000 of one time grant per candidate.

Procedure for release of Grants:  Once the application is approved; the grant would be released to the candidate in two stages.

Stage one: Rs. 30,000 on completion of First year of registration and the mandatory Course work required for continuing the studies; in case of MPhil candidates and others who are exempted from the course work require to submit proof accordingly.

Stage Two: Rs. 20,000 on completion of three years of registration and production of proof of submission of thesis;III.

 

One time Research grant for JRF candidates

Eligibility and Procedure

Eligibility: following are some of the broad conditions of eligibility laid down by III for the grant.

a. The candidates should have registered for PhD in Commerce/Economics/Management in any recognized university under JRF scheme. It includes State Universities, Central Universities, and Deemed-to-be-University institutions that are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Besides this, there are some autonomous institutions which do not have UGC recognition but are Institutions of national importance such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Schools of Management of IIT’s; the candidates in these institutes are also eligible.

b. This scheme is open to all the candidates pursuing PhD

c. Age limit would be applicable as prescribed by the UGC guidelines from time to time i.e. 28 years with 5 years relaxation to women and reserved candidates as per the present guidelines of 2011.

Procedure for application: The candidates are required to submit an application to III with the following details in the format provided in the website some of which are

i. Title of the thesis/area/topic in which he has been admitted to pursue PhD and the department/university details.

ii. Copy of the admission letter showing all the above; Brief summary/abstract of the work he proposes to undertake in the course of his studies.

iii. Proof showing that the candidate is admitted under the JRF system.

Research award after completion of Doctoral studies

There may be a section of candidates who have  already completed their doctoral studies and awaiting award of the degree. There may also be another section which may not be aware of the system of grants available and gets to know after he/she completes the work. This system takes care of the segment which does not get the benefits of the above scheme.

a. The candidates should have been awarded PhD in Commerce/Economics/Management in any recognized university.  It includes State Universities, Central Universities, and Deemed-to-beUniversity institutions that are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Besides this, there are some autonomous institutions which do not have UGC recognition but are Institutions of national importance such as Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Schools of Management of IIT’s;  the candidates in these institutes are also eligible. Candidates pursuing PhD in distance learning mode are not eligible.

b. This scheme is open to all the candidates pursuing PhD (full time/part-time/JRF)

c. No upper age limit is prescribed for application.

d. The candidates who have completed the Public Viva/whose names have been declared in press release can also apply. Formal convocation/award is not mandatory.

e. the candidate must not be receiving/received grant under any other scheme of research grants of III

Only those candidates who have completed their PhD in the academic year 2011-12 onwards shall be eligible to apply for this

Procedure for application: The candidates are required to submit an application to III with the following details

i. Title of the thesis/area/topic in which he has pursued PhD and the department/university details.

ii. Copy of the proof showing all the above; Brief summary/abstract of the work he has conducted in the course of his doctoral studies.

iii. Proof of award of the degree/viva/press release (whichever is applicable)Nature of Grant:  The grants shall be only in the form of financial assistance;  financial

assistance shall be provided to the selected candidates to a maximum amount of Rs. 50,000 of one time grant per candidate.

Tenure: this is a onetime grant and the same candidate shall not be eligible for receiving the grant under any other scheme of grants offered by III even if he is with the same/different university.

General Procedure for approval for all the grants: The applications received would be screened by the standing expert committee constituted by III for this purpose. All candidates are required to ensure that the application form along with all required enclosure is complete in all respect as  incomplete applications shall be rejected  during  scrutiny process.  The application  shall be scrutinized based on the details provided in the proposal and would be evaluated for its authenticity and requirement on a case by case method and shortlisted. The final decision would be based on the recommendation of the expert committee and the availability of the funds for the scheme. Mere submitting of applications and satisfying the eligibility norms would not entitle the candidate for claiming the grant. No claim in whatsoever manner by the candidate shall be entertained by III in this respect.

The names of shortlisted candidates shall be displayed on the website and also communicated through email id provided in the application form; these candidates may be required to attend a personal interview at III if necessitated

When to Apply: A candidate who finds himself eligible for any of the above schemes, can apply during any stage of his research work before submitting his thesis (except for the award). However, the grant would be provided only after the approval of the application for the remaining years of the research work. The candidate shall not be eligible for  any financial assistance for the years completed.

Release of Grants: All the grants shall be released only after submission of the required documentary evidence duly forwarded by the PhD supervisor of the candidate /Head of the concerned department at every stage as mentioned above;

Tenure: The maximum period for these grants would be for 36 months from the date of registration. There would be no renewal/extension of the period even if the university permits the extension of the term of the doctoral studies. The same candidate shall not be eligible for grant in case of re-registered cases or for pursuing the studies from the same/different university. This tenure is applicable only for grant and not award. The candidate  is not entitled  to  avail grants/award in more than one scheme mentioned above; each candidate shall be entitled to receive these grants only once and cases of re-registration shall not be considered for renewal/repeat of grant.

General information:

The grant is non-transferable and shall not be renewed.

The candidate is required to submit a copy of the thesis to the Institute once the PhD is awarded.

The candidate can publish or present papers in the conference on the topic related to his thesis and prior approval from III would not be required to publish the research reports and for other publications. However, a copy of these papers/reports/articles and publications must be duly sent to III library.

The copyright of all the intellectual work including the thesis would be retained by the author(s);

the copies provided by the author would be used by III only for academic purpose.
